Qantas has had a very bumpy ride in recent years but when the Australian flag carrier gets it right it remains a world-class airline.
Most of my recent flights to Asia have been on budget carriers - where you pay extra for absolutely everything except for your seat.
My weekend flight from Melbourne to Denpasar - paid for using frequent flyer points - was a very pleasant surprise.
There was no queue at check-in. I got upgraded to the extra leg space of an exit row without asking and boarding was painless.
Once onboard there was a pillow, a blanket and a bottle of water in my seat. And, as Qantas is a full service carrier, there was a choice of meals and free drinks.
I opted for a tasty cheese and mushroom ravioli dish (above) over a chicken salad and spicy beef noodles. The small bottle of Rob Dolan cabernet merlot was quite acceptable.
The info provided by the crew over the intercom was chatty and fun - as befitting a flight to a holiday destination.
And we were actually ahead of schedule until a weather event meant couple of go arounds ordered by air traffic control.
A good flight and baggage (no cost) arrived promptly. A nice reminder of how good Qantas can be.
Here are the details:
Sydney-Denpasar, daily direct flights operated on an Airbus A330 aircraft, fares start from $414 one way.
Melbourne-Denpasar, direct flights five times per week operated on a Boeing 737 aircraft, fares start from $415 one way.
