Farewell to The General Wine Bar & Kitchen - a much-loved McLaren Vale destination for wine and food lovers.
The General has this month been re-named as the much more logical Zonte’s Footstep Cellar Door.
Since it opened in 2016, the cellar door went by the seemingly unconnected name of The General Wine Bar & Kitchen.
“Sometimes the simple answer is the best,” says Anna Fisher, co-owner of the wine brand with vigneron Brad Rey.
“Locals knew The General was our cellar door, but it was confusing for new visitors to the region who were looking for Zonte’s Footstep.”
The General was named because it was built on the site of the original general store and post office at McLaren Flat - the heart of the community in the 1800s.
Since it opened as a wine bar and kitchen in 2016 it has become a favourite hang-out for locals on weekends.
“Nothing really changes other than the name - and the fact we are now open seven days a week,” says Brad Rey.
“Victoria Maxwell (above) will continue as manager and be running the kitchen especially for her famous Sunday English-style roast with Yorkshire puddings.
Fridays at the Flat will continue with its pasta/burger/curry themes and occasional pop-up events on Saturdays.”
