Global hotel group shuts down Russian operations

First McDonald's, then Starbucks. Now Marriott. Well-off Russian consumers are paying the price for their Government's invasion of and ongoing brutality in Ukraine.

Hotel group Marriott International announced this week that it is halting all operations in Russia.

It had already closed its regional office in Moscow and suspended new openings and planned new developments after the Ukraine invasion, Travel Mole reported.

“Newly announced US, UK and EU restrictions will make it impossible for Marriott to continue to operate or franchise hotels in the Russian market,” the company said in a June 3 statement.

Marriott has more than 20 hotels in the country operated by third parties which have remained open.

Marriott has operated in Russia for 25 years with showpieces like the Moscow Marriott Grand Hotel (above).

The company says it is "focused on taking care of our Russian-based associates" and helping those in Ukraine and Russia willing to work with Marriott overseas.

“We continue to join our associates and millions of people around the world in wishing for an end to the current violence.”

The company says ‘the process to suspend operations in a market where Marriott has operated for 25 years is complex."
