Visitors to the Yarra Valley in Victoria can now sample a new cellar door experience and a new menu at boutique Payne’s Rise winery.
The family-run wine producer has just unveiled a new dining menu at its freshly renovated cellar door, both overseen by husband-and-wife vignerons, Tim and Narelle Cullen.
Like many in the Valley, the business suffered in the wake of lockdown, with the usually bustling site forced into year-round hibernation during the pandemic.
The Cullens took the opportunity to expand their tourism facilities with an expansion of the cellar door and an extension of the dining area and function space.
The idea was to create a dedicated space for intimate wine tastings separate to the dining area.
The heritage foundation buildings overlooking the vines include historic Thomas Payne’s House and Stables.
With a bigger kitchen, and the engagement of a new chef, Anupam Paul, the venue also has dedicated spaces for weddings and functions.
Payne's Rise, located in Seville, has a history that dates back 160 years to Payne, one of the Yarra Valley’s first settlers.
Chef Paul, formerly of The Royal Hotel Mornington and the Calcutta Club, is offering a hugely expanded menu.
“We wanted to make sure that locals would feel comfortable continuing to enjoy long and lazy weekend afternoons with us, and that those coming up from Melbourne still felt they could experience that easy ambience, but also a moreish feed at the same time,” said Tim Cullen.
Payne’s Rise offers a casual inside menu with dishes including seafood linguine with prawns, calamari and rockling and a chicken curry with cashew sultana pilaf, naan bread and house-made chutney, alongside a pear, toasted walnut and pecorino salad and an assortment of 11-inch gourmet pizzas available in vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
Those wanting to enjoy a meal ‘picnic’ style can choose from a range of share platters as well as the pizza offerings.
Guests are invited to enjoy the original homestead, firepit, giant Jenga sets and stables with a glass of wine in hand.
