New flights to link Vietnam with London Heathrow

Vietnam’s Bamboo Airways was founded in 2017 and only launched in 2019 but it has big ideas.

Bamboo Airways has unveiled plans to operate up to six regular scheduled flights a week to London.

The first Vietnam-UK direct flights will serve London Heathrow from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Bamboo is expected to start scheduled flights before the end of the year and will operate Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

The direct 12-13-hour service will cut the current journey time with transit stopovers by several hours.

Bamboo Airways chairman Trinh Van Quyet said the airline expects to operate six round trips a week between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and London; and increase frequency based on demand.

The flights are expected to operate from Heathrow Airport's Terminal 2.

Nguyen Hoang Long, Vietnamese ambassador to the UK, said opening direct flights between the two countries would boost commerce and people-to-people exchanges, and would be particularly beneficial for the Vietnamese community in the UK.

There are currently over 100,000 Vietnamese studying and living in the UK, and around 60% of them are in London.
