Sisters-in-law doing it for themselves at Small Victories

High-profile Barossa winery Elderton is now sharing its cellar door with an interloper.

Sort of.

The sign went up this week to show that newly launched Small Victories Wine Co is now showcased at the Ashmead family's Elderton cellar door in Nuriootpa.

Small Victories is, in fact, part of the same family, as it is operated by Ashmead sister-in-laws Jules and Bec.

Their initial range includes a rosé, a vermentino and a pinot gris - all $25 - and "drink now" smashable wines made from different South Australian regions in a very different style to Elderton's serious Barossa reds..

Julie Ashmead is the head winemaker. Wine is in her blood, as she comes from a family with five generations of winemakers and winemaking history - the Campbells of Rutherglen.

She has worked at wineries around the world, and is mum to three boys, Angus, Wills and Louis, with her husband Cameron Ashmead.

Bec Ashmead has a wine marketing background and is the "production guru". She is mum to three girls, Charlotte, Sophie and Annabel, with her husband Alister Ashmead.

“The wines are seriously good but are made with an element of fun," Bec Ashmead says. "You don’t need to sit around talking about them, instead enjoy the moment as you savour them with friends and loved ones.

"Our wines are ready to drink right now. You don’t need a cellar to enjoy Small Victories Wine Co – you don’t need to worry about whether you’re opening it too early, or too late. Go ahead, open that bottle tonight."

All Small Victories Wine Co wines are made vegan friendly and are produced at the Elderton winery, which has solar power across the production facilities. Also, 100% of the winery water is recycled back onto the family vineyards in Nuriootpa.

The bottles are lightweight and the new brand is also doing its bit for charity.

The company promises that 50% of tasting fees at cellar door will be donated to charity - and a tasting flight is just $5.

A percentage of each bottle sold also goes to one of two chosen charities: Variety - the Children’s Charity and Trees For Life.
