Japan is to launch a digital Covid-19 vaccination certificate scheme from December.
The QR code-enabled certificates hosted on smartphone app will be used for international travellers initially, local media announced. There is no plan yet to use them for domestic travellers, although that might happen down the track.
The scheme will be overseen by Japan's new Digital Agency, which was recently established by the Government.
Less than half of the population of Japan is fully vaccinated, while about 60% have received the first jab - still way ahead of sluggish Australia.
The current vaccination records cards in Japan are only issued in paper format.
The Government is set to relax some restrictions for fully vaccinated people in the coming days to facilitate domestic travel, business and dining in larger groups.
Japan will create a system that complies with international standards.
