Yarra Yering and Bindi - a pair of star Victorian wineries - dominated the honours board when the 2022 Halliday Wine Companion Awards were announced in an online broadcast this evening.
Halliday Wine Companion chief editor Tyson Stelzer and founder James Halliday AM announced the winners of the major awards and varietal categories.
Yarra Yering in the Yarra Valley was named winery of the year and that winery's 2019 Dry Red No. 1 was named wine of the year.
Winemaker of the year honours went to Michael Dhillon from Bindi Wines in the Macedon Ranges. The Bindi Block 5 Pinot Noir 2019 was named pinot noir of the year.
The inaugural viticulturist of the year award went to Vanya Cullen of Cullen Wines in Margaret River, a leading organic and biodynamic producer.
The awards were a celebration of Australian wine following a challenging year and also marked the release of Australia's "wine bible", the 2022 edition of the Halliday Wine Companion, published by Hardie Grant Books, which will be available in bookstores from tomorrow ($39.95)
The book includes over 3,200 tasting notes.
Other major awards went to best new winery: Place of Changing Winds, Macedon Ranges; Dark horse winery: Renzaglia Wines, Central Ranges, NSW; Best value winery: Lake Breeze, Langhorne Creek.
