Halliday Wine Companion, the annual industry record for Australian wine, has announced a shortlist of finalists for its upcoming 2022 edition.
Winery of the year contenders are Cullen Wines, Duke’s Vineyard, Oakridge, Shaw + Smith, Bindi Wines, Yarra Yering, Yeringberg, Moss Wood, McHenry Hohnen Vintners and Helen’s Hill Estate.
Winemaker of the year finalists are Duane Coates of Coates Wines, Scott Ireland of Provenance Wines, Michael Dhillon of Bindi Wines, Adam Wadewitz of Shaw + Smith, Ian Hongell of Torbreck Vintners and Glenn Goodall of Xanadu Wines.
The winners will be revealed at Stokehouse in St Kilda, Melbourne, Thursday, August 12, and will be broadcast locally and internationally via winecompanion.com.au on the evening.
Judging for the Halliday Wine Companion Awards was conducted by the new tasting panel, led by editor-at-large James Halliday AM and wine expert Tyson Stelzer, the chief editor.
The panel also includes Jeni Port, Ned Goodwin MW, Erin Larkin, Jane Faulkner and Tony Love.
There will be seven major trophies awarded - including the new category of viticulturist of the year.
Other awards include wine of the year, winemaker of the year, winery of the year, best value winery, best new winery, and dark horse winery.
The awards and launch of the 2022 Halliday Wine Companion guide will mark the release of more than 9,100 new tasting notes, available on the morning of August 13, 2021. A total of 77 new wineries are featured in this year’s Companion.
