Is this the most Christmassy drink in the world?

I believe I have discovered the perfect Christmas holiday drink.

It isn't a whisky or rum, gin or vodka. It is made from pure sugar cane spirit in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Mulligan's Spiced Cane Spirit.

All 21 members of my wine class gave this the thumbs up earlier this week and it can be enjoyed warmed, at room temperature or chilled/over ice.

At room temperature, it tastes exactly like a liquid Christmas pudding, or the contents of a minced tart; full of spicy, macerated fruit flavours with a smooth finish. It comes in at 35% alcohol.

Spiced Cane Spirit comes from the Mulligan's Rum distillery, owned by the Mulligan family who have lived in the Penola community for over 100 years.

The distillery is situated at St Marys Vineyard, 15 kilometres west of Penola, on land purchased by the family in 1937.

Cane spirit is something of a rarity in Australia but is hugely popular in South Africa, where Mainstay, a clear bottled sugar cane spirit from the cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal, is often mixed with Coca-Cola as a sundowner.

I understand Mulligan's spicy number has also been known to be mixed with cola at the Royal Oak Hotel in Penola.

The Mulligan family also make very good wines under the St Mary's label, and a range of rums. gins, cane spirits and infused vodka. The Spiced Cane Spirit costs $48 for 700ml at www.mulligansrum.com/store/
