Meet the definitive reference guide to the great wines from Penfolds

Knowing exactly when to open one of those fabulous old bottles of wine in your cellar is one of life's great mysteries.

Leave it too long and cork can do its evil worst and you are left with a bottle of vinegar.

Open the bottle too soon and might have missed an opportunity for a brilliant experience.

Fortunately for anyone who collects Penfolds Grange, Magill Estate, or other great Penfolds reds, the new edition of The Rewards of Patience edition 8, will be released next month with a fetching new black cover.

This is the ultimate guide to all things Penfolds; offering collectors and drinkers an insight into knowing when to hold em', drink them, when to walk away or when to run.

The new edition contains tasting notes and cellaring windows for all the Penfolds premium wines, dating back to the experimental 1951 Grange - made by Max Schubert - a bottle of which recent sold for $103,000 at a Langton's auction.

The new edition comes seven years after the seventh edition in 2013 and features thoughts of a panel of national and international experts, including author Andrew Caillard MW, and chief winemaker Peter Gago.

Very few wineries open their cellars for scrutiny on such a scale - and hundreds of wines were tasted over four days at Magill Estate late last year.

These wines, of course, have been perfectly cellared. If your collection has been kept under a bed in the heat of North Queensland, it might be in a rather different condition. Either way, there is some fascinating reading here.

"I'm confident that this edition will stimulate, challenge and inform," says Gago (above).

The Rewards of Patience edition 8 will be available in English and Mandarin from December for $29.95. A perfect Christmas present for any Penfolds collector.
