Winery combines with remote indigenous artists for a unique cellar door experience

Calling all wine and art lovers in Western Australia: pencil November 20 in your diary as boutique winery and art gallery Mr Barval cellar door will be opening its doors for the 2020-21 season with a special event.

Having sold out of their last vintage in July, owner-operators Robert and Kellie Gherardi (above) will be celebrating the release of their new vintage wines including the 2020 Chardonnay, Rosé and Mistral (a viognier-marsanne blend), the 2019 Vino Rosso (petit verdot and merlot blend) and 2018 Cabernet Merlot.

Winemaker Rob produces small-batch, hand-crafted wines with an Italian influence – a nod to his family heritage.

The re-opening will be marked with a ticketed sunset launch event on November 20, where the onsite gallery’s inspirational new art exhibition Wandjina: The Rainmaker will be revealed.

The exhibition unifies a number of talented artists from the remote Indigenous community of Kalumburu in the Kimberley, where the Gherardi family recently spent three months living in the local community as part of Kellie’s remote-area nursing work.

The exhibition will be the first-ever whole-of-community collaboration of the local artist groups from the remote Indigenous community in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

These artworks are travelling thousands of kilometres to be on show in the Mr Barval cellar door.

“This is the first-ever time the separate artist groups in Kalumburu have joined forces as a collective – so it’s a whole-of-community initiative,” said Kellie.

Home to around 470 residents, Kalumburu is the most remote permanent settlement in Western Australia and is located on the King Edward River, 550km from Kununurra and 650km from Derby.

“Immersing ourselves in the community in Kalumburu was an extraordinary experience for our family," said Kellie. "We met some remarkable people; our kids went to school there, we even took our dog Sam all the way up there!

“This art exhibition means a lot to us – we lived and breathed Kalumburu, and we feel privileged to bring a little part of it home to Margaret River in the form of these incredible artworks.”

The exhibition is not-for-profit, with majority proceeds from the art sales going directly to the artists and the remainder being channelled into community health and wellness projects in Kalumburu.

Tickets to opening night at Mr Barval are $45 and include a glass of wine on arrival followed by a stand-up dinner, finishing with a selection of local artisan-produced cheeses and condiments.

Transport is available through The Margaret River Experience under the events tab: www.themrewa.com.au. See https://mrbarval.com/
