The Wynnsday stars are shining bright again

This Wednesday is Wynnsday - when the new premium vintage wines from Wynns Coonawarra Estate are released to the public.

Established in 1951, with history dating back to the late 1800s, Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the region's leading producer with some of the best and longest-established vineyard sites in Coonawarra. It is recognised globally as one of Australia's top producers.

I am an unashamed fan of  the work done by Wynns chief winemaker Sue Hodder and her team, who produce wines of style and integrity at very reasonable prices.

The 2020 Wynnsday Collection comprises five wines from the excellent 2018 vintage, including the standout Harold Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Hodder says the 2018 vintage saw the oldest vineyards perform exceptionally well.

“Wynns is fortunate to have many older vineyards and the 2020 collection, where we release wines from the 2018 vintage, reveals their individuality beautifully," she said.

The Harold vineyard is a long-time performer. The first Wynns single vineyard label was the 2001 Harold Vineyard and, in 2013, Harold was selected again.

Hodder says: "The 2018 is an excellent continuation to beautifully showcase the quality and terroir of this special vineyard.”

The Harold, with an RRP of $80, is a wine of style and poise; my pick of an excellent bunch.

The other wines being releases are:

Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon $45: an icon that was first produced in 1954 and uses some of the best fruit from terra rossa soils and it taut in its youth;  and the Wynns Black Label Shiraz (also $45), which includes fruit from the Undoolya vineyard, which was planted in 1894 and is bold and beautiful.

There are two V&A Lane releases; the Shiraz and the Cabernet Shiraz blend, both $60 and the work of Sarah Pidgeon. The blend is my favourite of the pair, a wine that shows the marriage of the two varieties at its best. A classic medium-bodied wine with berry fruits and classic cabernet minty notes. Superbly structured.

The Harold Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($80) is delightful in its youth but has the pedigree to cellar. It is made from a vineyard planted 50 years ago and produces wines that are both intense and stylish with fruit and oak in perfect harmony. It proved a magic wine-food match with a rabbit casserole. Brambly, spicy and voluptuous.

The 2020 Wynnsday Collection is available from Wednesday from fine wine retailers across Australia. See www.wynns.com.au
