The Ship Inn: historic accommodation with all mod cons

Stanley is a pretty seaside village in north-west Tasmania that is home to the Ship Inn, a historic guest house that reopened in 2019.

This charming accommodation started life as a pub in 1849 but today caters for modern tastes with luxury suites that start from under $200 a night.

For more active guests it has its own gym and yoga studio. The next-door cottage is where former Prime Minister Joseph Lyons was born - and is now open to the public as a museum.

Guests at The Ship Inn can climb the iconic volcanic plug known as The Nut – or take a ride on the chairlift when it is operating.

Alternatively, settle in at the Angel’s Share tasting room for the chance to sample the creations of several of the Apple Isle’s growing number of artisan whisky producers.

The town is home to Hursey Seafoods’ fleet of nine vessels, which catch southern rock lobster, scallops, giant crab, stripey trumpeter, gummy shark, flathead and other local fish – and sell them direct to the public.

Or eat at Tasmanian Wine & Food, where you will find platters and local wines, or across the road at the Stanley Hotel. Local restaurants options include bistro style, Asian-fusion, seafood, pizza or takeaway.

The Covid-19 break has allowed owners Kerry and Alastair Houston time to finish a new offering within the walls of the historic inn.

“This new two-bedroom, two-bathroom luxury apartment allows guests to immerse themselves in the story of Thomas Holyman,” says Kerry.

“It provides an intriguing glimpse into the seafaring adventures of a mariner known for his forthright nature and brash vocals. Barrel-chested and full bearded, one can imagine this salty old seadog resting by the roaring fire, just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge.”

Aptly named Roaring Tom’s, the apartment has transformed ageing spaces that once welcomed rowdy bar crowds seeking solace in beer and whisky.

“The original stone fireplace is still here, and the base of the paved courtyard was once lined with old smashed bottles,” explained Kerry.

“We’ve paid homage to those features, whilst creating a generous space for guests to cocoon themselves away in style”.

Tasmanian timbers, vintage artworks, historical artefacts, fine linens and contemporary fittings have quickly become hallmarks of the Ship Inn.

Roaring Tom’s boasts two king bedrooms, two bathrooms, a chef's kitchen clad in stone and timber, expansive dining area and stunning lounge with wood fire.

The apartment can easily accommodate two couples or extended family travelling together. Offering three separate outdoor patio areas, there is no shortage of space in which to relax and guests can soak in glorious ocean and garden views.

The apartment starts at $450 per night and includes continental breakfast provisions. Book direct and take advantage of the stay three, pay two special running until December 31.
