Cygnet, a 40-minute drive south of Hobart, is a lively little spot with arguably more cafes per head than anywhere else in Tasmania.
It is a hugely popular weekend destination.
The town's long-time favourite eatery, the Red Velvet Lounge, recently changed hands and reopened today under the ownership of chef Ben Wood and partner Kate Sullivan, who is running front of house.
Previously a vegetarian restaurant, the latest incarnation of the RVL aims to offer something for everyone; opening seven days a week for all-day breakfasts and lunch (although closed on Mondays for now), for takeaway pizzas on Thursday-Saturday nights and eventually for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
The opening lunch special was house-made beetroot tortellini with burnt butter, walnuts, local pears and blue cheese.
The all-day breakfast menu features familiar dishes like scrambled eggs with bacon and steak sandwich with chips, but there are also several vegan and vegetarian options, or you can opt for a simple toasted sandwich.
The wine list features Huon Valley locals Elsewhere. Chatto, Kate Hill and Hughes & Hughes along with interesting interstate choices from Alpha Box &; Dice, Battle of Bosworth and some European imports, while I can also recommend the very good milkshakes.
The service was extremely efficient and welcoming for an opening day, so I predict a bright future. Guests can eat indoor indoors, where there is a bright new decor, or in the courtyard.
