A new wine label launches in Tasmania - but it is one with a very familiar name

A new wine label was launched today in Tasmania - but the name will be familiar to wine lovers around Australia.

Marco Lubiana, talented 24-year-old son of Steve and Monique Lubiana from Stefano Lubiana Wines, lifted the veil on his Marco Lubiana 2018 pinot noir and 2018 chardonnay - both made from fruit grown on the former Panorama vineyard in the Huon Valley.

Panorama was purchased by the Lubiana family four years ago and has undergone serious work before the release of these two wines. It is now called Lucille's vineyard in honour of BB King’s guitar.

Lucille was first planted in 1973 by Steve Ferenze and is home to some of the oldest vines in the south of Tasmania.

The vines are planted on grey clay with river bed stones covered by a sandy loam top soil. The vineyard is in conversion to biodynamics with certification expected next year.

Both the pinot noir and chardonnay blocks have seen the addition to new clones to add complexity and the fruit is hand-picked and yields are kept low. Both wines are unfined and unfiltered.

Lubiana, a surfer in his spare time, says he makes his wines by "touch and smell" rather than numbers. He's just 28 vintages behind his Dad

The complex and rustic pinot is open fermented, basket pressed and matured for a year in older French barriques.

The chardonnay is dramatically clean and pure with bright citrus and appealing minerality with crisp acidity. Both retail for $50 - and I'll be fighting to get my hands on some chardy.
