Tasmanian wine producers band together

When the Hobart Mercury newspaper (known locally as the Mockery) decided to end its 20-year support of the Tasmanian Open Vineyards Weekend, several winemakers jumped in to save the popular event.

This year participating vineyards will be listed and promoted online with Greer Carland from Quiet Mutiny Wines setting up a website and a Facebook page in the absence of the booklet that has previously appeared in the local paper.

The Southern and Eastern Open Vineyards Weekend will run on February 29 and March 1, continuing a long-running tradition.

Wine producers in southern and eastern Tasmania will open their cellars for the one weekend - and many of them do not usually offer cellar door tastings.

The weekend provides locals and wine lovers from interstate with the opportunity to visit, taste wines and chat to the wine producers before they get busy picking grapes over the coming weeks and months.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to get out and about and discover the first-class wines we produce, with quite a few of the producers only opening their doors once a year for this event,” Carland (right) said.

“Many producers will offer back vintages and limited-release wines that you just don’t normally get to try and buy, with others providing food and music or tours of their vineyards.”

All participating wine producers are listed on the website at http://openvineyards.wine/, with a map showing their location.

More producers are being added daily and there are expected to be more than 30 wine producers to visit across the weekend.

Participants range from industry icons Derwent Estate, Frogmore Creek, Bream Creek (vigneron Fred Peacock is pictured left)  and Home Hill to more recent arrivals  like Altaness and Sailor Seeks Horse.

If you've never tried wines from Wobbly Boot, Resolution Vineyard, Bagdad Hills or Laurel Bank, now is your chance.
