New hotel boom in Tasmania

Tasmania's two largest cities - Hobart and Launceston - are on standby for an influx of powerhouse global hotel brands.

First cab off the rank is the 278-room Crowne Plaza Hobart (above), which is set to open next month with multiple restaurants and a rooftop bar.

Highlights here will include Core Restaurant and Bar (below), with a focus on Tasmanian produce, and The Deck, Hobart, an outdoor venue with views of kunanyi/Mt Wellington as a backdrop.

The hotel will also include Hobart’s first rooftop bar: Aura Lounge Bar, which is set to open in May. The kitchen brigade is led by former Frogmore Creek chef John Churchill.

Also due to open soon in the Hobart CBD is Mövenpick, a 196-room Accor Group hotel, and the 142-room Vibe Hotel.

An extra 21 rooms have also been opened at Moss, which opened at Salamanca Place last year.

Coming in the third quarter of 2020 is the Marriott Luxury Collection property The Tasman, a $50 million five-star hotel in a restored heritage building in Parliament Square.

Launceston, too, has a selection of new accommodation due soon.

Following last year's newcomers Stillwater Seven and Change Overnight, work is well underway on the brand new 86-room Hotel Verge in the city centre and the refurbishment of the former Clarion Hotel, now City Park Grand, on Tamar Street.
