New free Australian app helps wine lovers find BYO eateries

Leading wine writer Huon Hooke was recently bemoaning the lack of restaurants that permit wine lovers to BYO.

There are many reasons for BYO. Among them: a restaurant's poor or overpriced list; or the desire to open a special bottle with friends.

Australian wine and food lovers can now locate over 3,200 BYO restaurants around the country with just a few taps.

Wine retailer Cellarmasters has launched BYO Finder, a free app that helps wine lovers discover BYO restaurants in their area and recommends wines to go with their food.

“Our customers love to know they can enjoy a great bottle when they dine, which is why they prefer BYO restaurants so they can bring their own," said said Ben Copeman-Hill, general manager of Cellarmasters.

"We wanted to make it easy for them to have a great wining and dining experience every time, which is why we decided to create the BYO Finder app.”

A recent Cellarmasters survey showed over 74% of wine lovers prefer to dine at a BYO restaurant rather than just a licensed venue.

“BYO Finder is great for discovering new restaurants in your area, and it’s the perfect app to have on hand when you’re travelling,” said Copeman-Hill.

Anthony Cipri, co-owner of Cipri Italian in Sydney’s inner east suburb of Paddington – which offers BYO Sunday to Thursday – believes restaurateurs will be thrilled with the app.

“As we offer quite a refined dining experience, many customers are surprised when they find out that we offer BYO most days. That’s why the BYO Finder will be great for restaurants like ours, as this helps customers find us,” he said.

Key features of the app include an ability to locate BYO restaurants by GPS or search; wine with style of cuisine; book an Uber to the restaurant and the function to add your own BYO favourite restaurants (if not already listed).

Available on Android and Apple.
