Huon Hooke, one of the most trusted voices in Australian wine, was today named a Legend of the Vine at the Wine Communicators of Australia Sydney Royal Wine Show Trophy Winners Lunch.
Huon, one of the genuine nice guys of the wine business, seems to have been around for ever. I started writing about wine 30 years ago and he was there well before me - starting his career in 1983.
"The name Huon Hooke is synonymous with wine knowledge and his words of wine wisdom are respected globally," said WCA national chair Angus Barnes. "His outstanding contribution to the national and international wine world has made him a highly respected figure among both his professional peers and the wine public."
The long-time wine writer for The Sydney Morning Herald (his column size now sadly diminished) was 2008 Wine Communicator of the Year and currently writes for independent publications Decanter and Gourmet Traveller Wine.
He is the chair of the Vin de Champagne Awards, chair of the Australian Wine List of the Year and is a judge of the Australian Winemaker of the Year award.
A respected wine judge, Huon judges approximately 10 wine competitions a year in Australia and has also judged in New Zealand, Italy, England, Canada, Chile, Belgium, Japan, Slovenia and South Africa.
Hooke, who remains commercially independent and impartial, prefers to taste wines blind and conducts all of his tastings himself.
He is the seventh person to be awarded Legend of the Vine status in NSW, and joins a prestigious list that includes Clive Hartley, Iain Riggs, Rob Hirst, David Lowe, Phillip Laffer and Chris Anstee.
