Major international accolade for Penfolds

The world is full of wine awards. There are countless wine shows, particularly in Australia, and dozens of magazines and organisations willing to bestow their recognition and accolades  - often in exchange for advertising dollars.

Over the weekend, however, Penfolds was recognised as the ‘World’s Most Admired Wine Brand’ by Drinks International in an international poll judged by 200 industry experts including buyers, sommeliers, wine writers, Masters of Wine and business experts. A pretty serious award this one.

Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said: “All of us at Penfolds are so chuffed with this global recognition – from those working in our vineyards and wineries, on our bottling lines, back-of-house in logistics, procurement and marketing, to our talented sales teams around the world who are at the coal-face selling our whites, reds and fortifieds.

"After 172 years in the wine business we’re still hungry, still excited and still eager to make better wine and champion new followers.”

Drinks International’s acknowledgement builds on Penfolds evolving global recognition, with Penfolds named International White Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge.

The only other Australasian finalist was New Zealand's Villa Maria, which finished eighth.

The panel of judging participants for Drinks International was asked to cast votes on the "most admired wine brands" based on the following criteria: The wine is consistent or improving quality; It reflects its region or country of origin; It responds to the needs and tastes of its target audience; It is well marketed and packaged; It has a strong appeal to a wide demographic.

Krug was named the World’s Most Admired Champagne Brand, while the top 10 overall was: 1. Penfolds, 2. Torres, 3. Ridge Estate, 4. Casillero del Diablo, 5. M. Chapoutier, 6. Guigal,
7. Errazuriz, 8. Villa Maria, 9. Chateau d’Yquem, 10.  Tio Pepe.
