November is wine month in Tasmania

Tasmania's cool-climate chardonnays and pinot noirs - and some of the best sparkling wines to be found outside of Champagne - have put Australia's island state in the spotlight in recent years.

And there is no better month for vinophiles to visit Tasmania than in November, when there are several wine events on the calendar; and you can hit the state before the summer hordes begin to descend.

November 7-8: Tasmanian White Wine Weekend
Winemakers will gather to pour their very best sauvignon blanc, sparkling, riesling, chardonnay, schonburger, pinot gris, rosé, and dessert wines over the weekend at Princes Wharf No. 1 in Hobart. The line-up of Tassie’s finest cool-climate white wines includes the latest releases and the opportunity to talk to the people who make the wines. The entry fee covers tastings of all wines, a tasting booklet and a crystal Plumm glass.

November 13-15: Effervescence 2015
A festival that celebrates sparkling wine in all its forms, Effervescence 2015 will be held at Josef Chromy Wines at Relbia, south of Launceston. The line-up of food and wine talent this year includes the grand degustation with superstar chef Tetsuya Wakuda, and The Grand Tasting – a garden party like no other with 15 sparkling winemakers on show, along with fresh produce, music and stunning views over the vines. On Sunday, November 15, Effervescence goes on the road with Go South when Frogmore Creek, Moorilla and Stefano Lubiana wines get together for a day of in-depth tasting experiences with the winemakers, travelling from winery to winery and ending at Osteria at Stefano Lubiana for a three-course lunch matched with flights of sparkling wines. www.effervescencetasmania.com

November 21: Bicheno Food and Wine Festival
The East Coast of Tasmania is renowned for abundant seafood, award-winning cheeses and superb white wines. Get up close and personal at the Bicheno Food and Wine Festival and enjoy local wine, beer and cider makers, gourmet innovators, food producers and chefs, and kick back on the grass with the best local mussels, oysters, world food and sweet treats. There will be cooking classes for adults and kids, a beer brewing competition and even a pop-up café that only serves chocolate cake.

Throw in wine-related events linked to the Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival and tastings from the likes of Home Hill and Nandroya at the Huon Show and November really is wine month in Tasmania.
