The very best address in Bordeaux

There are some hotels that just ooze warmth and class, but also tick all the boxes when it comes to modern comforts.

Such hostelries are often independent hotels with a regular clientele but there are exceptions to every rule and delightful Hotel Burdigala in Bordeaux manages to combine boutique charm with being a member of Acccor's M Gallery group.

The Grand Hotel Bordeaux may be where the flashier visitors to Bordeaux opt to stay but you can't go past the Burdigala for friendly, helpful service and comfortable well-equipped rooms.

I arrive early; tired and jet-lagged. No problem, my room is ready (a mini suite no less with sexy red leather couches). The wifi is fast and free and complimentary plate of local cakes, known as canelles, is delivered to my room.

In a quiet quarter of Bordeaux, a stroll to Place Gambetta, the Burdigala is true five-star hotel with someone to help you with your bags (and take them to your room), room service from 7.30am until midnight, comfortable beds and bathrooms with quality toiletries.

It is less than €25 by taxi from Merignac Airport and serves an excellent buffet breakfast (I must confess I went back for a second large serve of deliciously fresh raspberries and strawberries).

The gourmet restaurant: La Table du Burdigala is open daily for lunch and dinner but dozens of other options are within walking distance, while Bacchus bar is open from 10am to midnight and also offers light snacks.

Check out is at a very generous midday while a recent makeover has ensured the hotel remains contemporary and stylish. Definitely my hotel of choice in the world capital of wine; stylish and understated.

Prices start from around €240 although there are special offers, including a three nights for the price of two deal available online.
